Quick startGet VoidInteract

Your first hinged door

A beginner exercise: configure one anchored leaf, inspect its motion and try the interaction.

Prepare

  • The practice room is already configured. For this fresh authoring exercise, load OakDoor and use Moving parts > Remove saved behavior first. All parts remain. Studio Undo can restore the behavior.
  • Use the practice room. Select OakDoor, not DoorFrame or the room root.
  • Its leaf, inset panels and both handles must be anchored and inside the moving Model.

Configure and review

  1. Load selection. Load OakDoor. Read its name in the header before editing.

Check: A saved door says Saved and shows no active Cancel. A new door starts a draft.

  2. Motion. Open Behavior and choose Hinge.

Check: Angle, hinge axis and the relevant viewport tools are visible together.

  3. Show handles. Use the visible handles, or click Show handles. Keep Y as the axis for this upright door. Drag hinge arrows toward the hinge barrels.

Check: The blue ghost changes while the original stays closed.

  4. Snap: ON. Use gentle snapping near an edge. Snap uses 0.1 stud steps. Hold Shift for 0.01 stud movement or 5° rotation. Alt moves or rotates freely.

Check: Only the chosen translation axis changes. Snapping can be turned off.

  5. Open angle (deg). Set the opening to 90 degrees for this room. Check both sides and the top of the leaf.

Check: The open ghost clears the fixed jamb and points into the room.

  6. Preview motion. Preview the whole movement and wait for it to finish.

Check: Apply becomes available only if this valid draft differs from the saved behavior.

  7. Apply. Save, then start Studio Play. Walk to the handle and use the shown prompt.

Check: The leaf, inserts and both handles move together. Activate again to close.

Expected result

The jambs and hinge barrels remain fixed. Every intended door member follows the same pivot, and closing restores the original position.

Practical limits

  • This hinge position is specific to this door. Use your own visible hinge edge for another model.
  • A combined mesh containing a frame must be separated first.

Selection and review

Changing your Explorer selection pauses the preview and keeps your draft. Choose Load selection to work on the new object, or select the previous assembly to continue editing it. If the preview stops at an obstacle, adjust the path and preview again before applying.
